Besides an Ultrasound Is There Anyway to Know if the Umblical Is Wrapped Around the Baby's Neck?
I feel him kick all the time, but I noticed I have been doing things subconsciously, like lifting my arms above my head to get something or bending over. I was told not to do this. I don’t want to harm my baby but I know I really need to stop this. Is there a way to know that its wrapped around his neck? sorry if its too much serious answers only please.
I had no idea it was an old wives tale I don’t even know what they are.
#1 Lifting your arms over your head will not cause any problems for the baby this is an old myth. The reason for this myth was to make it acceptable for mom not to do certain things while pregnant.
#2 There is NOTHING wrong with having a cord wrapped around the baby’s neck -it is actually protective for the baby. If the baby has a long cord it increases the chances that the cord could prolapse (come out before the baby during delivery). So the cord becomes wrapped around the baby. The baby’s neck is the smallest and one of the softest part of the baby -that means there is less chance during delivery the cord will become pinched between a bony part of the baby and mom’s pelvis. However in most healthy babies the wharton’s jelly provides enough protection for the cord that the cord can not become compressed enough to compromise the baby even during a stressful delivery.
Furthermore you can’t choke a baby by cutting off their throat -babies don’t breath until they are born. Even after they are born except in extreme circumstances the placenta/cord will continue to provide enough oxygen until such point as the baby is breathing well in its own (unless of course some idiot cuts the cord). This is why waterbirths are perfectly safe.
It’s an old wives tale that if you put your arms over your head you’ll make the umbilical cord wrap around the baby’s neck. There is NO truth to this myth.
Lifting your arms above your head while pregnant causing the umbilical cord to get wrapped around the babies neck is an old wives tale.
ultrasound i think is the only way for sure i think. if you are worried you should get it checked before its too late. it doesnt hurt you or the baby and it give you a wee chance to see your baby!! i dont think you can stap baby from getting tied up by lifting your arms up, so dont do that
All old wives tales, hun. Were you told by your doc not to do this, or by other people? Lifting your arms above your head will not cause the umbilical cord to be wrapped around your baby’s neck. I lift boxes at work, build displays, and bend over all the time. I’m almost 30 weeks pregnant and just had an ultrasound today. Everything is great so far. That stuff people are telling you is a complete farce.
I wouldn’t say there is, my daughter was born with the cord around her neck. They suspected it when I was in labor (fetal distress – hbpm was under 40) and I ended up with an emergency section when I was fully dilated.
We had a 3D ultrasound at 6.5 months and the cord was around her neck at that time as well – but we were told not to worry as it wrap and unwraps all the time.
That’s a myth. It’s actually very common for babies to be born with the cord around there neck. There is nothing you can do to prevent it and nothing you can do to fix it. It’s really not that big of a deal. When the baby’s head comes out they will have you stop pushing for a second while they unwrap the cord. This keeps the cord from getting too tight and causing complications. While your baby is floating around in there it really poses no risk.

No, there isnt.
Actually, the cord being around the baby’s neck is quite common. But as far as raising your arms above your head, thats an old wives tale. Now whats not so common is when my third child was born, he is 9 months old now, he had what they call a true knot in his cord. My OB said if it was any tighter he wouldn’t have lived and he is considered a miracle baby. It looked just like a pretzel. Don’t get yourself stressed out, just relax and enjoy your pregnancy!!!!
I have a 3 month old baby and we had numerous ultrasounds done throught the pregnancy right up to the day he was born. I asked the ultrasound tech once about the cord being around the neck and he told me that there is no danger in it unless it is wrapped around 3 times and that is very rare. Babies get all tangled up and untangle themselves all the time in there. Do not worry!!! You and your baby will be fine and while it is an old wives take (like dying hair–that is actually safe to do now) you do need to take it easy and let someone else do that kind of stuff for you. Good luck and congratulations.
BTW–Not to scare you, two of my children had their cords in complete knots and are totally fine. If you feel decreased kicks notify your doctor after 20 weeks, and make sure that you are having checkups because the doctor charts the baby’s heartbeat.
It doesn’t matter if the cord is around the baby’s neck. The baby does not breathe through it’s neck. Even after the baby’s born, it wouldn’t need to breathe through it’s neck until the cord was cut, which by that time would definitely have been taken off from around the neck.
If you don’t want to harm your baby then stop listening to old wive’s tales and if you have any questions consult your doctor.
