What Causes Pain in Your Neck When You Lift It Backwards?

    could be anything.. stress, depression, or even strain.. just sitting in front of the computer for a couple of hours.

    It could be several things that are causing it. Most likely one of your cervical (neck) vertebrae are causing some narrowing of space where your nerves exit from the vertebrae. When you tilt your neck backwards it is making the space even smaller, thus the pain. It could also be as simple as a muscle that is in spasm. If it continues, see a Physician for x-rays or an MRI.
