What Would Be the Best Way of Treating My Fussy, Squirmy Dog’s Bite Wound?

My two dogs got into a fight the other week. The smaller dog, Oreo, is mine and we immediately took in to see the vet. She wouldn’t let either the vet or myself get a good look at the bite wound, so we were asked to come in the next day.

I brought her in again and they took her into surgery for the day. They wound up putting drains (plastic tubing) in her neck to keep the holes open. Their instructions were to put hydrogen peroxide on regularly to keep everything clean and open. But Oreo wouldn’t let us anywhere near her neck to do this.

They took the drains out on Monday and even though we told them that she wouldn’t let us near her to clean the wounds like instructed, they told us it was alright. The vet remarked about the swelled lump on Oreo’s neck and sent us on our way.

The lump got bigger since then, and we took her in yesterday (Thursday) to the vet again. She’s being kept over night so they can put drains in again since I work early in the morning and can’t drop her off.

I’m just kind of looking for some suggestion as to some way I can make sure my dog’s bite wounds stay clear and open. She will NOT let us near her neck to do anything to it.

Then borrow a muzzle from the vet’s and wash out the wound as instructed.

Sorry – it’s about your dog’s health – so you have to be tougher and stronger than her!! The vet tech will show you how to muzzle her safely and it should be for a short time (I am assuming that she is on antibiotics as well as instructions to wash out or salve the wounds).

When having a dog, one must learn to be assertive and not let the dog control you. I understand that she is probably in a great deal of pain. But imagine if this time around you taught her its okay to "not let you near", and a bear trap snapped off her leg next time. What? Would she not let you near that either. It is very pertinent that you control her, not her you.
